RARE 1861 HAND COLORED ENGRAVINGOF MAJOR GENERAL JOHN C. FREMONT
Available for purchase is a VERY RARE hand-colored engraving of Major-General John C. Fremont.
The image is a historic depiction of Fremont in his "prairie costume" from his exploring days, early in his command. He is shown on horseback, holding a sword, leading other soldiers on horseback. The engraving was done by the illustrator "M. Nevin" and was originally published in Harper's Weekly Magazine on 13 July, 1861. Fremont was at his peak of popularity during that time, as President Lincoln had just promoted him to be Commander of the Department of the West during the Civil War. The Western department included the area west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River.
This particular engraving was published by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning in New York City. Although undated, this hand-colored version of Nevin's engraving was very likely published immediately after the Harper's Weekly illustration came out. Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning (active 1854-1863) were primarily known for map publishing, but they did occasionally seize on profitable opportunities for publishing other images for home display.
The image portion of the engraving measures about 13 1/2" tall and 9 1/8" wide (not including title and margins). I'm not sure of the actual paper size since I did not want to remove it from the frame.
The print is framed and matted in a wooden frame that measures approximately 19 5/8" x 15". I purchased this engraving at a recent estate sale. Please note that this engraving is NOT a reproduction and is GUARANTEED to be a hand-colored original from the 1860's. Please feel free to check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.
Condition of this antique engraving is GOOD. The colors have likely faded some over time (I have nothing to compare them to) and there is overall toning on the unpainted portions and margins. There are some small wear spots to the surface outside the image on the upper right side (very minor). I also see a few very small spots of what looks like white mildew along the edge of the matting. If you purchase this rare engraving, I would recommend reframing it with conservation materials. Overall, this collectible engraving displays well and would make a fine addition to any historical print collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase.
If you collect antique engravings and prints, particularly images of historical figures, don't miss your opportunity to purchase this offering. I've been unable to find another example of this hand-colored engraving pictured anywhere online and believe it to be VERY RARE. My Buy It Now price of only 9 is a bargain for this scarce engraving. So buy this piece now before someone else beats you to the deal!
