Description
We are offering a Cabinet Card Photograph of a Black Family Consisting of a Mother and Four Children Posed in Front of their Farmhouse. Photograph is by A.W. & G.E. Howes, Photographers, Ashfield, Mass. The Howes Brothers traveled Massachusetts taking and selling photographs, the most common type of photograph was of a family proudly standing in front of their residence. The people in these photographs would have placed orders for their photographs. Each of the Howes Brother's photographs were numbered on the back. This one is numbered 13. The original negatives and prints of the photographs would have been kept in the studio, and if customers wanted to purchase more photos, possibly to send to friends or distant family members, they would place an order using the number on the back of their photograph.
We believe this photograph most likely came from the Howes photography studio.
The family is posed in front of an arbor covered in vines that are bare, as are the two trees, indicating the time of the year is probably late Autumn after the leaves had fallen off or early Spring before the new leaves have filled in. A barn can be seen to the left of the house a short distance away, with what looks like a plowed field in front of it. By the side steps we can see a dog house with baskets placed on top. The girl on the left is standing next to what looks like some type of a water well.
