Letter #1-Confederate letter from W.M. Covington addressed to James Luke in Wilcox, Ga. November 28, 1861 Camp Jackson near Portsmouth, VA. This is a 3-page letter. Below is most of the transcription from the first page, with correct spelling. It reads as follows:
I will avail myself of the opportunity of this evening to write you the news of camps as we have no fight yet and it appears as if North Harbor is thought but little concern. The Yankees has the best navy in the world and we are stationed at the place to protect it and have it well fortified and are preparing a fleet to travel through the struggle and if I can I expect to go aboard as a _____ care for the war of life. For the life which has been one of pleasure and sunshine has turned to darkness and gloom and I think is likely to remain this way. For I have been scared for two months and the curse is my sweetheart has died since I left home and I have the blues since and I think likely to remain for I am regiment and have had measles and mumps all year. But all is well now and (there is only) a few other cases of other kinds of sicknesses in camp. I want to be a party to enjoy myself and I never want to get ill and if I do, I hope someone will be police enough to give me a ___________ of which I made ___________.
This letter also refers to a Mr. Fortner and the remaining 2 letter are from the confederate soldier J.L. Fortner.
Letter #2-Letter from confederate soldier, J.L. Fortner. October 18, 1861 Camp near _____ Mills, VA.
This letter appears to be 3 different letters, written on one 4-page piece of paper. The first letter is written to his sweetheart, where he requests her to tell him if she has an interest in another, and if she does, he will
"steer his boat in a Northerly direction
". The second letter is to his sister, which is more difficult to read. The third letter is to James Luke, in which has asks James to read the letters to his sister and sweetheart. The letter is addressed to James Luke, who we know from the Covington letter (leter #1), resides in Wilcox, Ga.
Letter #3-Confederater letter signed by J.L. Fortner.
From camp near Orange courthouse_______of VA March 22.
"............crunched up in our little tents surrounded with a sheet of snow .........."
Note that this letter is not addressed, however, since it was purchased with the first 2 letters, it can be assumed that it was also sent to James Luke.
