Description
Beaded Snake from an Ottoman prisoner of warAmazing art -
** LENGTH 37 cm
During the captivity, Ottoman (Turkish) prisoners used small glass beads to make snakes, lizards, bags, belts, bookmarks and jewelry. They would sell these creations to make money in order to fill out their vouchers and buy useful items. Some detainees used them to exchange with other detainees or sent them home as gifts. Crocodile snakes were the most popular of the souvenir beads created in the POW camps.
Snakes are a symbol of good luck in parts of Southeastern Europe, perhaps giving them symbolic significance to their makers. A snake is basically a tube, which is very easy to crochet. Beadwork snakes were made following a pattern from the tail to the head, with two basic designs on their backs: zigzag or diamond. In both of these options there are many variations on the colors and the complexity of the designs.
