    Description

    We offer a first edition original 7" x 9.5" stipple engraving of the Union then Brigadier General with facsimile autograph by John Rogers from a Matthew Brady photograph, 1865.  There is some light foxing and the piece has been trimmed.
    This engraving was included in
    "From: The Great Civil War - Vo. III” 1865  by Robert Tomes, M. D. and Benjamin G. Smith.  The original Brady photograph has Custer posted seated on a chair, his arm resting on the chair arm.....the engraver changed it to a cannon.
    Note: THIS IS THE REAL DEAL!  THERE ARE DEALERS ON E-BAY PURPORTING TO SELL THIS SAME ENGRAVING AS THE 1865 EDITION.  IN FACT THERE'S WAS PRINTED IN THE MID 20TH CENTURY ON WHITE PAPER AND BEARS A CONGRESSIONAL BLURB AT THE BOTTOM, WHICH THE ORIGINAL PRINT DOES NOT HAVE.  THE ORIGINAL WAS PRINTED ON LIGHT CREAM PAPER AS SEEN IN THE SCAN ABOVE.
