Description
Title:Incredible
Original Period 1870's Officer Oil on Canvas painting of
Bismarck
at the Victory of the Franco-Prussian War.
Description:
Absolutely
superb oil on canvas painted by
presumably
a master artist from just before or around the turn of the 20th century.
The
artist created a
scene
in a very
a surreal
and dreary aftermath of battle. Blending dark and dull colors further magnify the overall somber
perception
and mood of the painting.
Standing
gloriously
front and center is what appears to be Otto Von
Bismarck in his youth
with his horse in full
ensemble
including front plate
pickelhaube
, i
ncluding
his sabre with knot and plush trench overcoat. The
Cavalrymen
are seen riding to his side in the
background
.
Ominously depicted in the background is a tower
eerily
fading the background. The foreground depicts various lifeless
objects
scattered from the aftermath of the battle
further
illustrating the raw
morbidity
of battle. It
appears
to be a French
Napoleonic
Regimental Pattern Flag pole and a French cartouche pouch which e
ludes
to the Franco-Prussian War.
The
frame although modern is
extremely
well made and further
adds
a pleasant
aesthetic
appearance to the painting. Canvas is housed in its original wood mount with corner wedges. Mounted with modern hardware
Condition: Good condition, does show some signs of wear including small dings/scratches and cracks. Various cracking of paint but does not look to be flaking or peeling off. Modern frame is a lovely
addition
and appears to fit perfectly. Looks to be a repair in the back or recanvasing but am not certain. Please ask for more photos!
Approx Measurements:
Frame: 22 1/2" by 27" with 3" width
Sight: 15" by 19"
About Me:
Like most, I picked up the collecting bug many years ago when I was younger rummaging through the nooks and crannies of my grandparent's summer house in upstate New York. Today, you can still see me doing the same thing, only I don't fit through much of those spots anymore but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the thrill of the hunt. I
am an avid enthusiast for all things unusual, one-of-a-kind, and historical, with a specific focus on militaria and other remarkable, eccentric, antique oddities. Since I know you have the same eclectic tastes as I do because your reading this, please checkout my other items section as I always have new unusual stuff coming in!
