Description
Great early original photo taken in Armstead, Montana on August 30, 1915. There was a celebration in Armstead that day with hundreds of people present along with many Lemhi Shoshone Indians for the purpose of dedicating a memorial for SACAGAWEA, the Indian maiden who created a position in American history for herself for the aid she rendered the Lewis & Clark expidition. Mrs. Irene Halterman, of Helena, a great granddaughter of Sacagawea was also present at the dedication. A large bronze tablet was provided by William A. Clark from his foundry in New York and this was placed on a huge boulder brought in on the Oregon Short Line railroad. The newly built Hotel McIntyre is visible in the background. Armstead is about 20 miles south of Dillon, but in 1961-1964 the Clark Canyon Dam created a reservoir that completely inundated the former site of Armstead. Nice rare early interesting and historical photo! Size of photo is 6-5/8" x 4-7/8". *** CLICK ON FULL DESCRIPTION FOR ADDITIONAL PHOTOS.
