Let's be honest, Quartz like this is infamous for being temperamental.  Visible cracks are difficult to differentiate between a Striated line in the stone or an actual crack.  I suggest the "Tap Method"... before you begin shaping your piece.  Hold it in your hand flat and tap it (don't hit it, for heaven's sake), just give it a few light taps in different areas to see if or where it will crack.  This will save you time and frustration... Nothing like nearing the end of a finished piece and having it snap.
I purchased this rough because of the parallel striations running through the piece, it makes for beautiful contrast.
